Halifax Regional Council Applauds Huskies' Win

(Ottawa-- Monday, November 25/2002)-- Mayor Peter Kelly, on behalf of Halifax Regional Council, today extended congratulations to Coach Blake Nill, his staff and members of the Saint Mary's University Huskies football team on winning the Vanier Cup over the weekend.

The Saint Mary's team defeated the Saskatchewan Huskies 33-21 to claim the national university championship in Toronto's Skydome on Saturday. It was the second consecutive win for the Saint Mary's Huskies, one of only three teams in the Cup's history to post back-to-back wins.

"Council and the citizens of HRM applaud Coach Nill and his team for once again keeping the Vanier Cup in the east-- where it belongs. We commend the dedication, determination and commitment shown by all members of the Huskies organization. The win over the weekend truly distinguished the Halifax Region and Saint Mary's as the home of champions, " he said.

Mayor Kelly said Halifax Regional Council will host a special recognition ceremony and reception for the Huskies at City Hall within the next week or so.

The Mayor is in Ottawa today and tomorrow as part of the Big Cities Mayors Caucus who are meeting with various Federal cabinet ministers to press the Chretien government for increased funding to municipalities.

Mayor Kelly may be contacted at his hotel in Ottawa (614) 241-1414.
