HRM Allocates $50,000 for Heritage Home Renovations
(Thursday, March 27, 2003)-- Halifax Regional Municipality has allocated $50,000 through its Heritage Incentive Program to assist homeowners in the cost of renovating 15 heritage homes in the region.
The Heritage Incentive Program offers owners of registered heritage properties a matching grant (50 per cent) of the cost of alterations, providing they use traditional materials and maintain the historic design of the building. The grants awarded to date range from $794 to the maximum of $5,000.
Linda Forbes, who is restoring her Victorian home on Pleasant Street in Dartmouth, has applied for funding under the incentive program. She says maintaining the quality of her heritage property is important to her; however, adhering to the traditional style and methods required for heritage homes adds considerable expense to the cost of renovations, particularly if the property is in disrepair.
Ms. Forbes said "The money from the Heritage Incentive Program was a big help. But more importantly, it shows an appreciation of the people who are trying to rebuild or restore heritage buildings in the region."
The incentive program is designed to encourage registered heritage homeowners to keep their properties traditional, in good repair and to encourage the registration of new heritage properties.
Matching funds are awarded for properties meeting specific criteria, including the age of the residence, the use of traditional materials and the nature of the proposed alterations.
Following the launch of the Heritage Incentive Program last Fall, HRM received applications to fund 55 projects. The 15 approved were for work completed prior to 2002. HRM is now considering applications for work completed in 2002 or projects planned for 2003.
