Mayor to Participate in 60th Anniversary Events

(Thursday, May 1/2003)-- Mayor Peter Kelly will represent Halifax Regional Council at ceremonies to mark the 60th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic this weekend.

There will be a "Parade of Veterans" march from City Hall to Sackville Landing on Saturday, May 3rd to participate in the Merchant Navy ceremony, which has been advanced by one day for this year only.

The Parade will be composed of Canadian Armed Forces personnel, veteran's groups, RCMP and Halifax Regional Police, Armed Forces cadets and local school children. The groups are scheduled to gather in Grand Parade at 9:45 a.m. and the Parade is scheduled to begin at 10:15 a.m.

When: Saturday, May 3, 2003

Time: 9:45 a.m. for 10:15 a.m.

Where: Grand Parade, City Hall, 1841 Argyle Street, Halifax

In advance of the ceremony, the White Ensign flag has been flying in Grand Parade, beginning Monday (April 28th) of this week.

Several other local events are planned in addition to the national ceremony at the Sailor's Memorial in Point Pleasant Park on Sunday, May 4th.
