Mayor Kelly to Start Event in Wheelchair

(Friday, June 13/2003)-- Mayor Peter Kelly will be among the official starters tomorrow at the first annual Rick Hansen "Wheels in Motion" event at the St Mary's University Sports Stadium.

Mayor Kelly, and event organizers Dr. Michael Riding and Sue Mason, will start the fund-rasing effort in wheelchairs, making their way around the track at the St. Mary's stadium.

The "Wheels in Motion." campaign asks Canadians to walk, run, bike, wheel or skate on June 14th to help raise funds for spinal cord research and to help improve the quality of life for those with spinal cord injuries.

Fifty per cent of the net proceeds raised will remain in the participating communities and the remaining 50 per cent will support spinal cord injury research, ultimately leading to a cure.

From 1985-1987, Canada's Rick Hansen ignited the passion and interest of the world as he wheeled the circumference of the Earth in his wheelchair to raise awareness and funds for spinal cord injury during the record-setting odyssey-- "Man in Motion World Tour."

Today, Rick Hansen is President and CEO of the Rick Hansen Man in Motion Foundation, created to accelerate improvements to the quality of life for people with spinal cord injury.
