A Shilling for a Park
(Monday, June 30/2003)---- Who says a shilling doesn't go as far as it used to?
In the Halifax Regional Municipality, a shilling will get you public access to 186 acres of wooded parkland, with valuable water frontage, in the heart of the urban core.
The residents of HRM have a 999-year lease from the Crown on Point Pleasant Park and its time again for the annual one-shilling payment. (A shilling is worth about 11-cents at today's exchange rate.) The park was first leased to the people of Halifax in 1866.
The ceremony to officially handover a shilling to the Queen's representative will be held at Martello Tower, off Cambridge Road, Thursday, July 3rd at 2:30 p.m.
When: Thursday, July 3, 2003
Time: 2:30 p.m.
Where: Martello Tower, off Cambridge Road. (Enter Park through the upper parking lot area at Tower Road)
