New Lake Use Regulations Proposed

(Thursday, July 31, 2003) - Draft regulations for the use of all motorized water craft on Kearney Lake in Halifax, and on Lake Banook and Lake MicMac in Dartmouth, have been released by Halifax Regional Municipality. These regulations have been prepared under Canadian Coast Guard policy, which requires the Municipality to review existing motorized craft regulations on these lakes and submit a formal request for federal approval.

These regulations result from public consultation with property owners and users of these lakes. Further public comment is encouraged on the draft regulations. The Municipality will make formal application to the federal government in September of this year for approval of the regulations. It is anticipated that these will become effective in Spring of 2004. The draft regulations are being sent to lakefront property owners, as well as to a list of identified stakeholders such as boat clubs and paddlings groups, community groups etc. Signs have been posted at visible locations around each of the lakes to outline the proposals.

Proposed Regulations:

Lake Banook: Maximum speed limit of 10 km/h on entire lake.

Lake MicMac: Maximum speed limit of 10 km/h:

- Within 30 metres of shoreline, around the 2 westerly islands, and mouth of bridge underpass (at confluence of Lake MicMac and Lake Banook),

- Within 50 metres of the public boat launch on Braemar Drive;

- Over north end (about 25%) of lake surrounding the 5 northen-most islands, including the mouth of the Shubenacadie Canal

Maximum speed limit of 90 km/h (approx. 50 knots) on remainder of lake excluding those areas as set out above.

Kearney Lake: Maximum speed limit of 10 km/h:

Within 30 metres of shoreline;

At the mouth of the narrows and beyond to the southeast (Halifax) end of the lake.
