Communities in Bloom Judges Arriving This Weekend

(Wednesday, August 13/2003)-- The national jury for the annual "Communities in Bloom" competition arrives in Halifax this weekend for two days of judging.

HRM is a finalist, along with Laval, P.Q.; Toronto; Edmonton; Chicago; Kalamazoo, Michigan; Nice, France; and Aberdeen, Scotland, in the International Challenge category. Winners will be announced at the National Awards Ceremonies to be held September 27, 2003, in Stratford, Ontario.

The Communities in Bloom competition provides an opportunity for communities across Canada to compete in a challenge of beautification, tidiness, and community pride. The competition brings together individuals and groups from community organizations, institutes, and corporations. Judging includes overall tidiness, turf areas, environmental efforts, urban forestry, heritage preservation, and community involvement.

Judges for the International Challenge category include Matthew Rosen, Horticulture Manager, City of Des Moines, Iowa, and Hubert Noseworthy, retired Superintendent of Parks and Recreation, St. John's, Newfoundland.

The judges will tour a number of public, private, institutional and commercial properties and sites throughout HRM during their visit.
