South End Residents to Discuss Student Housing Difficulties

(Tuesday, September 16/2003)-- Student housing and its effects on surrounding neighborhoods will be the topic of a public meeting tomorrow evening in south end Halifax.

Councillor Sue Uteck and officials from HRM's Community Response Initiatives will be meeting with local property owners at the LeMarchant-St. Thomas School, on Watt Street, beginning at 7 p.m.

Litter, noise by-law violations, curbside waste collection problems, on-street parking and graffiti are just a few of the topics that will likely be discussed.

Councillor Uteck is leading an effort to amend the municipality's Noise By-law, which would enable police to ticket the property owner, as well as tenants, for any violations of the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. quiet period.

Also, Halifax Regional Police's Community Watch Program will be introduced and explained at the meeting.

When: Wednesday, September 17, 2003

Time: 7 p.m.

Where: School Gymnasium, LeMarchant-St. Thomas School, Watt Street, Halifax
