Citizens Urged to Serve on Boards, Committees and Commissions

(Monday, September 22/2003)-- Mayor Peter Kelly said today there are a number of current and upcoming vacancies on various municipal boards, commissions and committees for any citizens interested in volunteering their time and effort to making HRM a better place in which to live, work, play and learn.

Mayor Kelly said "Volunteerism is the highest level of community service. There are many citizens in HRM who want to give something back to their community and I can think of no greater way than to serve on a municipal board, commission or committee.

Public service brings with it a great deal of personal satisfaction, and at the same time, helps to make HRM an even better community than it is now."

The Mayor said there are a number of vacancies becoming available soon as current terms of serving members begin to expire.

"In order to allow as many citizens as possible to apply and to encourage the broadest range of representation possible on HRM boards, committees and commissions, the deadline for applications will be October 3, 2003.

In addition to volunteers to serve on committees of Regional Council, residents may also apply to serve on a number of committees established under HRM's Community Councils.

For further information about volunteering to serve on municipal boards, committees and commissions, residents are asked to contact the Office of the Municipal Clerk at 490-6524.
