Unstable Ammunition at DND Depot

(Friday, October 3, 2003) - During Hurricane Juan, several pleasure boats washed up in the area of the Canadian Forces Ammunition Depot. As a result, 10-14 pieces of unstable ammunition have been located in the area of Rent Point and the Missile Maintenance Facility.

The Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team of the Canadian Forces Fleet Diving Unit are forced to detonate onsite because the explosives are considered unstable. To do so, they require a 700 metre safety zone, which encompasses Magazine Hill and surrounding highways.

This requires the closing of several roadways for 15 minutes within every 45-minute period, beginning at 2:30 p.m. this afternoon.

The roadways affected include:

Akerley Blvd to Windmill Road
Eaglewood Drive and Dartmouth Road
101 Inbound from Windsor
Sackville Exit

We appreciate the public's cooperation and patience.
