New Uteck Trophy to be Unveiled
(Wednesday, November 5/2003)-- Mayor Peter Kelly and Councillor Sue Uteck will be among those attending the official unveiling Friday of the new Uteck Bowl, to be presented annually to the winner of the Canadian Inter-University Sport football semi-final game.
Halifax Regional Municipality responded to a request earlier this year by the Atlantic University Sport organization to sponsor the creation of the new championship trophy and case.
The bowl is named after former Halifax Regional Councillor and Deputy Mayor Larry Uteck, who died earlier this year as a result of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease.) Councillor Uteck had previously succeeded her husband as representative for District 13 on Halifax Regional Council.
Uteck was a former CFL player and All-Star. He came to Halifax in 1982 and took over the coaching reins of the Saint Mary's University football team in 1983. He led his team to numerous conference championships and three appearances in the Vanier Cup. He later took over the job as Athletic director and instilled his coaches and their teams with the same positive attitude that has led to so many Saint Mary's wins in sports.
There will also be a list of local events announced leading up to the Uteck Bowl game to be played on Saturday, November 15, 2003.
When: Friday, November 7, 2003
