Playgrounds and Sports Fields Re-opened
(Tuesday, December 9, 2003)-- After several weeks of clean-up work all but one of HRM's 600 sports fields and playgrounds have been declared safe and re-opened. The public is advised to remain on trails and paths around these sites as surrounding areas may still have hurricane damage that will only become apparent after winter storms.
The only exception to the opening of the playgrounds and sports fields is Wentworth Playground, on Green St. in
Dartmouth where clean-up and repair work continues.
HRM's Parks and green spaces were devastated by Hurricane Juan. Although the recovery process is well underway, it will take time to renew our parks and urban forests and plan for their long-term, sustainable futures.
Approximately 1,200 parks, green spaces, play grounds sports fields, trails and urban forests have to be assessed and, as necessary, cleaned up so they can once again be used safely. In late November 50 sports fields and play grounds were declared safe to re-open.
Clean-up work continues on parks, trails and green spaces. In the weeks and months ahead we will be keeping the community informed of further re-opening through announcements on our web site and in the news media.
