Bike Lanes Part of Interchange Improvements

(Wednesday, December 10/2003)-- As part of the improvements to the Lacewood Drive/Highway 102 interchange, bicycle lanes were incorporated into the overall design of the new interchange.

A bike lane has been built along the north side of Lacewood Drive. It begins at Fairfax Drive and ends just west of the interchange. Along the south side of Lacewood Drive is a wide curb lane, which is designed to accommodate bicycles and motor vehicles in the same lane. Appropriate bike signage and road markings are completed.

Councillor Sheila Fougere, chair of the HRM Bikeways Task Force, said these latest improvements will encourage greater usage of bicycles as a mode of transportation in the urban core.

"We have some bike lanes in the downtown and central core, but this is the first in the Clayton Park West area. Every new lane that we can designate is progress, and hopefully in the next number of years, we will have an appropriate network of bike lanes to enable cyclists to easily, and safely, travel about the urban core, " she said.

Roxanne MacInnis, HRM's Transportation Demand Management Coordinator, said the Lacewood project is the first major improvement that has been undertaken since Halifax Regional Council approved the adoption of the "Blueprint for a Bicycle Friendly HRM."
