Community Council Will Not Discuss Proposed Moratorium
(Monday, February 9/2004)-- The Chair of the Harbour East Community Council says members are prepared to discuss a proposed development for Paddler's Cove in Dartmouth, but will not entertain discussion on a call by a recently-formed citizen group for a building moratorium around Lake Banook.
Councillor Bruce Hetherington said today a public information meeting scheduled for February 18th will deal only with a proposed condominium development at Paddler's Cove that has been in the works for some time.
"This public consultation process has been underway for more than a year now. We've talked with area residents, we've listened to the local boat clubs and we even had a wind study done to determine the effects, if any, future development might have on the lake," he said.
Councillor Hetherington said that more than 50 per cent of the land surrounding Lake Banook is publicly owned, and that fact severely limits any wide-spread future development on the lake.
"We have a very good public consultation process in place and we are going to follow it. The people who are the closest to the issue, and those who have shown the most interest in this subject, have been working with us for some time," he said.
