Core Area Volunteer Firefighter Recruitment Drive

(Wednesday, March 17, 2004) - Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency advises residents of Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford, Cole Harbour, Westphal, Eastern Passage/Cow Bay, Sackville/Lucasville, and Cherrybrook that a volunteer firefighter recruitment drive is taking place.

The volunteer firefighter will participate in firefighting, rescue, emergency medical services and program delivery relating to fire prevention and public education. Applicants are required to attend training every Tuesday evening and every second weekend for four months. Upon successful completion of this training, volunteers will be assigned to their local station and will respond to fire emergencies. Once assigned to their station, volunteers will be required to attend training at least every Tuesday evening. When proficient in the necessary skills, after approximately 18 months, volunteers can be tested for their Level 1 Certification.

Becoming a volunteer firefighter means being part of a team that fights fires, saves lives, conducts rescues, assists with fire prevention, administers first aid, and helps the community. The Fire service is dedicated to saving lives and protecting property through fire prevention, suppression and public education.

Qualifications to become a volunteer firefighter include: grade 12 or equivalent, 20/30 corrected vision, normal unaided hearing, valid class 5 driver's license, is and agrees to remain a non-smoker, clean criminal record, good lifestyle choices, legally able to work in Canada, understand and communicate in English, and physically fit.
