HRM, Transit Union to Ask Province for Conciliator

(Friday, March 26/2004)-- The Halifax Regional Municipality and the Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 508, have reached impasse in collective bargaining. The parties have been negotiating since July 2003. The collective agreement expired on August 31, 2003.

ATU, Local 508 represents bus operators, ferry workers, and fleet maintenance workers, among others.

There are a number of significant issues which remain outstanding, including wages and group benefits. The Halifax Regional Municipality is optimistic that a provincially-appointed conciliator will assist the parties in reaching a negotiated agreement.
