Mayor, Councillors to Raise Funds for Marguerite Centre

(Wednesday, April 28, 2004)-- Mayor Peter Kelly and some members of Halifax Regional Council will be pumping gas and washing vehicles this weekend to help raise money for a local women's shelter.

Councillor Reg Rankin is organizing the event and he is hoping for a large turnout this Saturday at the Beechville Irving Station to raise funds for the Marguerite Centre, which is a long term, residential centre for women in recovery from addiction and abuse.

Beechville Irving Station will make a separate donation to the non-profit organization and the funds from the car wash will also be donated to the centre.

Sister Connie McIsaac, of the Marguerite Centre, said "Councillor Rankin has been a supporter of the Centre from the start and we are pleased that he is making his business and his time available to help us raise funds. The local community has also been very supportive, so we are pleased to get out with those in the community to take part in this wonderful event."

The fund-raiser will offer free hot dogs and balloons for children accompanied by an adult. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

When: Saturday, May 8, 2004
Time: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: Beechville Irving, opposite entrance to Beechville Estates housing development
