Police Chief Invested into Order of Merit

(Monday, May 10,2004) - Congratulations were extended today to Chief Frank A. Beazley of Halifax Regional Police on being named an Officer of the Governor General's Order of Merit of the Police Forces.

Mayor Peter Kelly, on behalf of Halifax Regional Council; Greg North, Chair, on behalf of the Board of ( HRM) Police Commissioners; and Chief Administrative Officer George McLellan extended congratulations to Chief Beazley on being named a recipient of this very prestigious award.

Mayor Kelly said "Frank Beazley is the second Chief of the Halifax Regional Police to be honoured with this very distinguished award since its inception in 2000.(The late Chief David McKinnon was honoured in 2002.) We should be truly proud that the strong leadership they have shown and the high standards they set for policing services in our community have been recognized nationally."

Mr. North said "Chief Beazley, through his hard work, determination and commitment to excellence, sets the bar high in policing services for others to follow. The members of the Halifax Regional Police Commission and I extend our sincere congratulations to the Chief and look forward to working with him for many more years to come."

Mr. McLellan said "This is truly a great honour for Chief Beazley and the citizens of Halifax Regional Municipality. The Chief joined the department as a constable and worked his way up through the ranks. He has not only excelled locally, but nationally, and we are pleased that his contribution to policing in Canada has been recognized through the Order of Merit."

Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, Governor General of Canada, recently announced the names of police officers from across the country who were invested into the Order in Ottawa today.

This Order holds a prestigious position in the Canadian honours system. It is the civilian counterpart to the Order of Military Merit. The three levels of membership - Commander, Officer and Member - reflect long-term, outstanding service in varying degrees of responsibility.

The Order of Merit of the Police Forces was created in 2000 as a means of recognizing conspicuous merit and exceptional service by men and women of the Canadian Police Forces.

In closing, Mayor Kelly said "Membership in the Order is based on the highest quality of citizenship, service to Canada, to the police profession, and to humanity-at- large. Through their activities, Members, Officers, and Commanders bring distinction to the Canadian Police Services."
