Local Heroes to be Honored

(Thursday, May 20/2004)-- Mayor Peter Kelly and Councillor Harry McInroy (District 5-Eastern Passage-Cole Harbour South) will present certificates of appreciation at a ceremony in Halifax Hall tomorrow to a number of individuals who helped two pregnant women get from home to hospital during the February '04 blizzard.

Melanie Edwards, of Cole Harbour, went into labour during the blizzard, but was unable to reach the ambulance waiting for her at the end of her street. With the help of an RCMP officer, two paramedics and an HRM worker, she was loaded in the bucket of a front-end loader and transported to the ambulance, which took her to hospital. Shortly after reaching the hospital, little Rachael Marie was born.

Kelly Zinck, also of Cole Harbour, had assistance from RCMP and paramedics during the blizzard. Baby Zinck was born on February 21/04.
