HRM and IAFF Bargaining Unit Ratify Agreement

(Tuesday, July 6, 2004)-- Halifax Regional Municipality and the Halifax Regional Professional Fire Fighters Association have ratified a 12 year collective agreement which will be effective June 1, 2004 to May 31, 2016. This follows a similar agreement with the Municipal Association of Police Personnel, which was effective July 1, 2003.

The agreement ensures that there will be no work stoppage for the full twelve years. Wages will also non-negotiable for twelve years. Starting in 2006, the First Class Fire Fighter Wage will be linked to the First Class Constable wage rate. The differential between the two will be 8% on October, 2006 and will move to a differential of 5% by October 1, 2015.

There will be "re-openers" during the course of the agreement, at which time any unresolved matters will be referred to arbitration for resolution.

The collective agreement exemplifies the spirit of co-operation between the Union and Management, which comes from a joint focus on continuous, high-quality, and cost-effective service to the public.
