Councillor Sloane Responds to Inquiries regarding Affordable Housing

(Friday, July 9, 2004) Councillor Dawn Sloane responded today to allegations surrounding her decision to follow through to acquire Affordable Housing. The application and approval process, has been a long term one, which she embarked on in 1997, prior to becoming a Regional Councillor. She had arranged a Neighbourhood Watch function in which a presentation was made by Grant Wanzel of the Creighton-Gerrish Association.

Qualifications for the Affordable Housing project, included the condition that a person's income must fall between $30,000 to $50,000. Based on these qualifications, which Dawn Sloane met, she submitted her name to the waiting list. While new legislation states there is no requirement for a down payment on first time buying, the Creighton-Gerrish requires a down payment of 5 %.

All municipal-related dealings with the Creighton-Gerrish and HRM were done prior to Dawn Sloane being elected as a Regional Councillor in 2000.

Councillor Sloane states ' I know first-hand that there is a need for more affordable and fixed-income housing and I have made a fifteen year commitment to my community by virtue of pursuing this opportunity. Hopefully my personal experience will help bring this need to the forefront for others".
