Fort Needham Bells
(Friday, August 27, 2004) - The bells at Fort Needham will not be ringing today, August 27, until November 23 while repair work is completed this fall.
The Halifax Regional Municipality in partnership with the Halifax Foundation will be repairing the 14 bells at Fort Needham. The bells will be removed from the site for repair, the structural steel support will be recoated and the copper roof over the bells will be restored.
Larry Oakes, Project Manager with Real Property and Asset Management, says: "The contract for the scope of work was awarded to Duron Atlantic and they will be bringing in a bell specialist to ensure the work is done properly."
Hoarding will be erected around the monument but the park area at Fort Needham will remain open to the public.
The bells will ring again in time for the Halifax Explosion Memorial Service which is always held on December 6. After that date, the bells will resume their ringing schedule from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. every 15 minutes.
