Fire Officials to Monitor Silo Unloading
(Thursday, September 2/04)-- Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency Service has been working with the owner and operator of the Grain Elevator in south end Halifax monitoring temperatures of wood pellets stored in a silo there.
Fire officials have advised the owner, the Halifax Port Authority, and the operator, Halifax Grain Elevator Limited, to remove the pellets from one silo (containing 1,600 tonnes) to prevent any potential fire hazard as a result of high temperature combustion. Crews will continue to monitor the remaining four silos.
The removal operation will begin at mid-day tomorrow (Friday, September 3) and is expected to take between 14-16 hours to complete. Fire and Emergency Service crews will be on-hand throughout the operation.
Residents in the surrounding neighbourhoods may detect a slight odour once the unloading operation begins.
Fire and Emergency Service officials said the owners and operators of the grain elevator operation have been very helpful and cooperative in addressing in this issue.
