Grain Elevator Silo Unloading Continues

(Tuesday, September 7/04)-- Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency continues to monitor the removal of wood pellets from seven silos at the grain elevators in south end Halifax.

Fire officials are working with the owners, the Halifax Port Authority, and the operator, Halifax Grain Elevator Limited, on the removal of 9,600 tonnes of wood pellets stored in seven silos, which were awaiting shipment overseas.

Fire and Emergency crews will be on-hand at the grain elevators until the removal operation is completed, probably by the end of this week.

Residents in the surrounding neighbourhoods may detect a slight odour during the unloading of the products into trucks.

Fire and Emergency officials said the owners and operators of the grain elevator operation have been very helpful and cooperative in addressing in this issue.
