Donation Contributes to Completed Expansion of Gray Arena in Dartmouth
(Tuesday, November 23,
2004) – The Dartmouth Whalers Hockey Association, along with
the SEDMHA, presented a cheque for $50,000 today to Mayor Kelly
for the completed expansion of the dressing rooms at the Gray Arena
in Dartmouth. SEDMHA is recognized as one of the largest International
hockey tournaments in Eastern Canada.
“It is an honour to accept this donation from the Dartmouth
Whalers Hockey Association and SEDMHA,” said Mayor Kelly.
“The expansion has been successfully completed and the facility
will now accommodate the needs of many players for years to come
thanks in part to these organizations.”
The $50,000 raised from tournament funds and general revenues was
matched with an additional $50,000 from the Province of Nova Scotia
Sport and Recreation Division. Another $190,000 was funded by the
Halifax Regional Municipality.
“The funds raised for this project attest to the dedication
of the Whalers Hockey Association and SEDMHA,” says Dr. Robert
Melanson, president of the Dartmouth Whalers Hockey Association.
“We are proud to have contributed to making this arena more
adequate for players and visitors alike.”
The expansion now houses two full sized dressing rooms with showers,
along with a referee change room. The project was initiated because
previous rooms provided inadequate space for the growing and changing
needs of the minor hockey association. The Dartmouth Whalers call
this arena home – using 20 hours per week ice time. The Dartmouth
Minor Hockey Association is comprised of about 60 teams under its
belt, all of which play at the Gray Arena.
The construction was completed in August 2004, just in time for
the new season.
