PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

Herring Cove Road Streetscape Project Looks Towards the Future

(Friday, September 24, 2004) - With what many in the Spryfield area are calling something of a renaissance for Herring Cove Road, Halifax Regional Municipality is now looking to plan for the future of the street and its immediate surroundings. With business renovations including a new large Shoppers Drug Mart and a soon to be completed reuse of the former Canadian Tire, District 18 Councillor Steve Adams notes that, “The amount of business development on Herring Cove Road is better than it has ever been.” But this coupled with other community development poses an important question: Should Herring Cove Road be simply a thoroughfare or will it have a pedestrian-friendly community focus?

Halifax Regional Municipality recently hired Ekistics Planning and Design to develop a community plan for Herring Cove Road and it’s immediate surroundings. This is to occur with a high degree of public consultation, with District 17 Councillor Linda Mosher stating that it is her hope that, “Everyday members of the community will become involved with the project because the recommendations that come out the process will likely have a lasting impact upon the community. The plan will serve as a guide for decisions over matters such as general civic improvements, land use, and traffic and transportation.” The study area for the project extends from the Rotary to Roach’s Pond.

Ekistics launches its first round of public consultation on Thursday, September 30 at the Captain William Spry Centre with a public workshop starting at 7:00 p.m.
