OVERNIGHT WINTER PARKING BAN

(Monday, December 13/2004)-- Motorists are reminded that the provincial overnight winter parking ban in areas outside the HRM Urban Core is now in effect. As a result, no vehicles shall be parked between the hours of 1:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. on streets located in the former County of Halifax that are maintained by the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and Public Works.

HRM’s overnight winter parking ban will not come into in effect in the Urban Core prior until weather conditions warrant. The starting date will be determined by prevailing weather conditions. HRM will notify the public through the media in advance of the implementation. Once the ban comes into effect, it will apply each night from 1:00 am to 7:00 am until March 31, 2005, regardless of weather conditions.

In addition, residents are reminded that Section 139 of the Motor Vehicle Act provides that parked vehicles obstructing snow removal or winter maintenance operations may be removed at the owner’s cost, regardless of time or date.

Having streets free and clear of parked vehicles during snow storms makes for more efficient and cost-effective snow removal operations and facilitates better mobility by emergency response agencies. The cooperation of motorists in that regard is appreciated.

For details of the Urban Core boundaries and more information on the HRM Winter Parking Ban, please visit the HRM website at www.halifax.ca or contact the HRM Corporate Call Centre at 490-4000.
