Roaming Bear Causing Concern in Lake Echo/Porter’s Lake

(Friday, September 24/04)-- Councillor David Hendsbee is urging residents in the Lake Echo/Porter’s Lake area to exercise extreme caution in light of the number of reported bear sightings in recent months.

A roaming bear has been frequently visiting the area between the Ponderosa Drive, Lake Echo, to O'Connell Drive , Porters Lake, over the last few months.

With school now back in for the 2004/05 academic year, the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has advised officials at O'Connell Drive Elementary School to warn students not to take lunches outdoors during recess or on lunch hour breaks.

Councillor Hendsbee said a DNR bear trap has been set-up locally, and a registered licensed bear hunter has set a bear-bait site to tranquillize the animal if found.

He said DNR has also conducted a local street canvas to alert the residents about the need to store their Green Carts in garages and/or sheds between collections, until the bear has been captured.

Residents are asked to place the Green Cart or bags of garbage out for collection on the morning of collection day and not the night before. The spraying of the inside of a green cart with a mild cleaning solution will reduce the odours that attract bears.
