Councillor Thanks Fire, Police, Other Agencies

(Thursday, October 7/04)-- District 12 Councillor Dawn Sloane today thanked Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency Services, Halifax Regional Police, the Red Cross and the Salvation Army for their tremendous efforts in dealing with the major fire at a Cogswell Street rooming house overnight.

Fire destroyed a building at 5539 Cogswell Street, which forced the evacuation of several nearby buildings. HRM had issued an Order to Vacate the rooming house recently, after a number of Fire Code and Minimum Housing Standard violations were revealed during an inspection.

Councillor Sloane praised fire crews for containing the blaze to the rooming house, and preventing from spreading to other buildings in the neighborhood.

The Salvation Army offered overnight shelter to the residents forced to flee their homes as a result of the fire.
