Jason MacCullough Park to be Dedicated Tonight

(Wednesday, October 13/04)-- Jason MacCullough Memorial Park will be officially dedicated during a ceremony this evening, being held in conjunction with the 5th annual Candlelight March Against Violence.

The march is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. this evening at the Dartmouth Boys and Girls Club on Farrell Street.

At about the halfway mark during the march, participants will stop at Big Pinehill Park, where Mayor Peter Kelly and District 9 Councillor Jim Smith will officially unveil a new sign renaming the park in memory of Jason MacCullough, who was murdered in the park several years ago. His murder remained unsolved.

" I am encouraging as many residents and organizations as possible to come out and join in the March, as well as to attend the dedication ceremony," Councillor Smith said. “ This year, we hope to have the largest turnout ever. The young people in the community are being contacted through their schools by the ‘Knowledge Is Power’ group to participate."

Other groups involved in the march, aside from the Dartmouth Boys and Girls Club, include the Independent Order of Forresters, Neighbourhood Watch, District 9 Citizens Association and Halifax Regional Police.

Councillor Smith said area residents who cannot join in the march are encouraged to turn on their outdoor lights in support the marchers.
