Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency Introduces New Fire Safety Program At Colonel John Stuart Elementary, Cole Harbour

(Friday, November 5, 2004) The Media is invited to view the first performance of "The Great Fire Escape" Performance as follows:

When: Monday, November 8, 2004
Time: 12:30 p.m.
Where: Colonel John Stuart Elementary School, 5 John Stewart Drive, Cole Harbour

Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency’s Fire Prevention Officers Kevin Thomas, and Wayne Higgins have developed an interactive stage performance to teach school aged children from grade primary to six, fire safety.

The performance includes scenes such as 1) Mrs. O'Leary's Cow and the great Chicago fire, 2) The origins of fire, 3) Reporting emergencies to 911, 4) Explanation of Fire Fighters Gear,
5) Escaping from smoke and fire in a house, and 6) The importance of smoke alarms and fire escape planning.

This new program is designed to reach more students in a shorter period of time, by teaching in an assembly setting, and not the classroom.

Both teachers and the principal of Colonel John Stuart Elementary will participate in the activities. The performance will be interactive, and enjoyable, by students, teachers, and the fire service.
