Clarification On HRM Cat Regulations

(Tuesday, March 8, 2005) - A number of residents have been calling HRM offices recently with with regards to the Proposed Cat Regulations. Many people are of the misunderstanding that the Cat Regulations will be in effect, immediately after Budgets are approved. However, the allocation of funds to implement the regulation is just one aspect of the process.

HRM Staff are currently in the process of developing Cat Regulations for consideration by Regional Council. A draft Report, which was sent to Council on January 20, 2005, recommending the status quo relative to any regulations regarding cat control be maintained, was not approved.

Once the proposed Cat Regulations are re-drafted, they will be sent back to Council for further deliberation. A Public Hearing will also be required before the Cat Regulations are approved as part of the pending harmonized By-Law A-300, Respecting Animals & Prohibited Animals.
