Sackville Sports Stadium Society Board Members Resign
(Friday, March 18, 2005)--- It is with mutual regret that HRM and the Board of Directors of the Sackville Sports Stadium Society jointly announce today the decision by their members to resign from their current positions.
Volunteer Board members were elected to the newly- formed Sackville Sports Stadium Society in November 2003. At the time, they were provided with a Memo of Understanding (MOU) to work towards entering into an agreement with Halifax Regional Municipality for the management of the Sackville Sports Stadium. Prior to the election of the new board, HRM had taken back control of the management of the facility.
Upon the board’s resignation, Chairperson Barbara Grant said, “Since our election 15 months ago, board members have expended considerable initiative, time and effort working towards a management agreement with HRM. However, we do not feel that HRM has shown the same initiative or displayed any sense of urgency in taking the necessary steps to enter into a new management agreement with the Sackville Sports Stadium Society. As a result, the board members find that we cannot fulfill the roles for which we were elected.”
In response to the board’s resignation, Peter Stickings, Acting Director of HRM Real Property & Asset Management, said, “We recognize that volunteers in the community can help us effectively deliver some programming in ways we could never achieve on our own, by ensuring the programs are ones which are relevant to that particular community.” He added, “We want to make the Sackville Sports Stadium as financially stable as possible before handing it back over to a community group. The facility is now showing signs of trending back in the right direction, however, this exercise has taken longer than originally anticipated. We thank the board members for their interest.”
HRM remains committed to seeing volunteer community members involved in the operation and management of their facilities throughout the municipality.
