Phase 2 of Repairs to Needham Bells

(Friday, April 15/05)-- Halifax Regional Municipality is starting Phase II of repairs to the Halifax Explosion Memorial Bells Monument, located in Fort Needham Park .

Councillor Patrick Murphy said a recent inspection confirmed that two of the 14 bells in the tower are not working.

“A number of citizens told me the bells just didn’t sound the same. HRM staff are tracing the problem now and steps will be taken to correct this deficiency,” he said.

The District 11 Councillor said interior electrical components will be repaired this year, including the keyboard, wiring and circuit breaker. In addition, the municipality intends to install an interpretive panel at the site. About $50,000 has been approved for this work.

Last year, HRM refurbished the bells and the structural steel supports at the tower.
