Councillor Commends Car Company for its Community-Mindedness

(Tuesday, April 26, 2005)-- District 22 Councillor Reg Rankin today congratulated General Motors of Canada for donating a new van for use by the Marguerite Center, a long-term residential centre for women in recovery from addiction and abuse in the Timberlea area.

The vehicle is one of six new vans that General Motors of Canada is donating to the Metro United Way for use by their agencies that have transportation needs.

Councillor Rankin said “ This new General Motors vehicle will provide an opportunity for both staff and residents of the Marguerite Center to venture forth into our community and beyond, providing them with new experiences and perhaps opening up new avenues for those embarking on a new path in life.”

The Councillor commended the automaker for its generosity and for implementing its GM Community Wheels program, adding “With a large corporation so community-minded, I will certainly think twice before considering buying a foreign vehicle, compared to a General Motors product.”

Community Wheels provides new Chevrolet, Pontiac and Saturn vans to local organizations that require vehicles as part of their efforts to help people in the community. GM Community Wheels was piloted in Edmonton with United Way of the Alberta Capital Region in 2003, and since then GM has expanded the program to include Vancouver, Montreal, Quebec and today, Halifax.
