HRM Launches Community Clean-Up Campaign
(Tuesday, May 10, 2005) - Halifax Regional Municipality is teaming up with Clean Nova Scotia and St. Mary’s Elementary School in south end Halifax to launch its annual community clean-up campaign, "Put Litter in its Place".
"This campaign is an opportunity for all residents to take a proactive step in making our community cleaner and safer for everyone,” said Mayor Peter Kelly. “ Last year, over 170 clean-up events were held throughout HRM, and this year our goal is to exceed 200 events. Students at St Mary’s Elementary are an example of how taking a stewardship approach can work to better our environment."
The school has full three-stream source separation programs in place and an active ‘Green-Team’(students who help educate other students about environmental issues including litter and recycling). Mayor Kelly will present a token of appreciation to this group in recognition of their efforts.
Community groups, schools or individuals may contact Clean Nova Scotia @ 420-3474 to register their event and will receive a free 'Pick Me Up' Kit, which includes a guide book, posters, garbage and blue bags and a data sheet to keep track of what materials are collected.
