First “Great Dartmouth East B-B-Q” This Saturday
(Wednesday, August 10/05)-- Councillor Andrew Younger (East Dartmouth - The Lakes) today announced plans for the first “Great East Dartmouth B-B-Q”.
“It has been a strong wish of mine to develop a program of community events,” says Councillor Younger. “Bringing the community together in an atmosphere of celebration is extremely important. Over the years, we’ve allowed these type of events to go by the wayside, and in doing, so we’ve lost out on opportunities for community development. I see this event as helping residents take ownership of their community.”
This community event, which is intended to become an annual one, will take place this Saturday at Beazley Field in Dartmouth, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.
This family-targeted event is free, and includes a hot dog B-B-Q (first 700 patrons only); a bounce castle; a three-on-three basketball tournament; and many track-style activities for kids.
Police and fire services will be on hand to display and demonstrate services and equipment. Information will also be available on many of the services and organizations operating in the community.
While Councillor Younger started work on the event last fall, he credits many community organizations with making the event as big and exciting as it is. Scotiabank, the Dartmouth Community Health Board, and the United Way have all come on board in recent months with important financial support for the event.
“In addition to our financial sponsors, The Dartmouth Family Centre and HRM Recreation staff have worked very hard on this event over the past two months,” says Councillor Younger. “With their support I am sure this event will grow very quickly in the years to come.”
Later this summer, District 6 will also play host to a fall festival called “The Pumpkin Patch”.
