Civic-minded Youth to make Presentation to Mayor Kelly
(Wednesday, August 24, 2005) - Eleven youth participants of an HRM Recreation Program called “Urban Survival Camp” will meet with Mayor Peter Kelly on Friday to offer him a glimpse into what matters most to the next generation of HRM citizens and leaders.
The presentation to the Mayor wraps up the 8 day/1 night camp designed to inform, educate and engage youth in civic affairs. During the week, camp participants (ages 14-16) embark on a fun and informative exploration of the processes and services required to sustain a regional municipality of over 370, 000 citizens, and learn the importance of becoming involved in the decision-making process within their communities. The teens examine the city’s needs (food, water, transportation, waste management and governance) and how they are being met through visits to City Hall, waste management centres, food outlets, Metro Transit and other city centres.
During their meeting with the Mayor, the youth will report on what they learned through their week-long urban experience, share with the Mayor what makes them proud about living in HRM, and offer recommendations from a young person’s perspective on areas where they feel municipal government could make improvements.
The presentation will take place:
