District 12 Councillor Dawn Sloane to Honour Heroine

(Friday, September 9, 2005) - Councillor Dawn Sloane, District 12, will be presenting a local heroine with a plaque from the residents of District 12 in recognition of her efforts in the rescue of senior citizen from Halifax Harbour.

On Wednesday, August 24th Maureen Riley risked her own life to rescue a 73 year old woman who had slipped and fallen into Halifax harbour. Had it not been for the split second, heroic efforts of Miss Riley, the situation could have been very tragic.

Councillor Sloane said. “Maureen Riley’s efforts were heroic and selfless and we need to recognize our residents who go above and beyond to make a real difference in the lives of others. Miss Riley showed tremendous bravery and courage by jumping into the waters of Halifax Harbour to perform this rescue”.

Also in attendance at the ceremony will be friends and family of Miss Riley’s.

Councillor Sloane would like to The Chronicle Herald for providing the photo used in the plaque being presented to Miss Riley.
