HRM Encourages Residents to be Prepared for Possible Storm Conditions on Weekend

For Immediate Release

(Friday, September 16, 2005) The HRM Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) and staff of Transportation and Public Works are on standby in the event that tropical storm Ophelia has an impact on HRM over the weekend. Weather conditions are being monitored and preparations have been made to implement emergency operations as required.

HRM is encouraging residents to err on the side of caution and prepare for the possibility of storm conditions. Residents should have battery-operated radios and flashlights readily available. Also, check rain gutters and secure lawn furniture and other items that may be on your property. If you are on well water, draw water to have on hand in case of a power outage. Residents who are in areas prone to flooding, ensure sump pumps are working and move valuables to higher ground.

In the event that the storm hits, updates, alerts and information can be found on the HRM website www.halifax.ca or by calling the HRM Call Centre at 490-4000. Information on power outages can be obtained by calling Nova Scotia Power at 428-6004 or 1-877-428-6004.
