Nova Scotia to celebrate Waste Reduction Week

Truro, Nova Scotia - Waste Reduction Week in Canada takes place October 17th to the 23rd. To celebrate, RRFB Nova Scotia has partnered with Clean Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia Environment and Labour, and the 55 municipalities of Nova Scotia to deliver events throughout the week. There will be many activities taking place across the province to encourage people to get involved in waste reduction activities.

Municipal waste reduction educators will visit businesses throughout the week to spread the message of the 3R’s and composting. Educators will offer blue boxes and educational information to businesses during this initiative.

RRFB Nova Scotia will be running a province-wide ENVIRO-DEPOT Contest. Visitors to an ENVIRO-DEPOT™ can enter their name can to win a weekend at Dundee Resort and Golf Club or a blue box full of “waste reduction” promotional prizes.

Clean Nova Scotia is once again challenging families to reduce their waste and share their successful strategies through the Just Between Families Contest. The winning family will receive a weekend getaway at Liscombe Lodge. Families can enter online at www.clean.ns.ca.

RRFB Nova Scotia will launch its 6th annual Nova Scotia Recycles Contest. This contest is open to students in grades primary to twelve. Over $28,000 in cash and prizes are available, including seven $1,000 scholarships for grade 12 students.

Residents of Halifax Regional Municipality can see what happens to recyclable material once it leaves the curb at an OPEN HOUSE at the Materials Recycling Facility, 50 Chain Lake Drive, Bayers Lake Business Park, on Saturday October 22nd, 2 to 4 pm.

Halifax Regional Municipality advises residents of a Fall Special Household Hazardous Waste mobile depot event.

Those residents who need to dispose of any household hazardous wastes can drop it off on Saturday, October 22nd at the Eastern Passage/Cow Bay Fire Department, 1807 Caldwell Rd. Only household hazardous waste will be accepted. The depot will operate from 9 am to 4 pm rain or shine. For more information, please call 490-4000 or visit us online at www.halifax.ca
The public is also invited to two COMMUNITY SWAPS, sponsored by HRM and hosted by Clean Nova Scotia. Items are to be dropped off on the day of the event at the event location. All items must be clean and in good condition. Any left over items will be donated to charity. No electronics or hazardous materials will be accepted.
