Fast Ferry Preview

(Thursday, October 27, 2005) HRM has chartered the vessel, Whaling City Express, for sea trials and data collection as part of the investigation into the feasibility of fast ferry service between Bedford and downtown Halifax. This catamaran ferry is based in New Bedford MA and is similar to the vessel being considered for operation in Halifax Harbour.

A comprehensive Ferry Cultivation Study is expected to be completed in December 2005 and will be recommended to Regional Council for further consideration and action.

As part of the sea trial component of the study now underway, HRM will be inviting the public on board the fast ferry on Saturday, October 29th.

The Media is also invited for a preview run on the Fast Ferry tomorrow, Friday, October 28th, 2005.

Departure Time: 1 PM sharp
The trip time to downtown and back is approximately 20 minutes each way.
The fast ferry will not dock in downtown Halifax but will make the immediate return trip to Bedford.

Where: Whaling City Express, departing Bedford from Convoy Quay’s South Jetty. Take Convoy Run off the Bedford Highway and turn right to access the parking lot.

Mayor Peter Kelly, Regional Councillors and members of HRM’s transportation staff will be on the vessel to provide the preview.
