North Preston Striving to be Model 9-1-1 Community
(Tuesday, January 31, 2006)-- The community of North Preston is striving to become the "model" 9-1-1 community in HRM when it comes to civic addresses.
During the past six months, 20 public and private streets were named after families in the community, as part of a civic address correction project. A community-based civic addressing group was formed to guide the project, including members from the North Preston CORE group, HRM civic addressing staff, members of the local RCMP detachment, and local Councillor David Hendsbee.
Some of the street names are first names, and some are last names. The group is producing a pamphlet that provides a history of the family names, and it will be available to those attending a "North Preston Street Launching" this weekend.
The ceremony this Saturday will focus on providing a brief history of each of the names and then having family members have their picture taken with the street sign blade. (The street signs blades will actually be installed on February 20, the effective date for these name changes.)
HRM staff will be working with the community over the next few weeks to provide and install the standard blue and white civic number plates for every addressed property in the community. As well, all public signs have been upgraded to meet current civic addressing standards and all private roads/ lanes will be signed as well. Public roads have green and white street signs; private roads have black and white street signs.
