NEWS RELEASE
Main Street Project Seeks Committee Members

(Tuesday, February 7/06) --- HRM is accepting applications for two positions on Dartmouth’s Main Street Streetscape Design Project Steering Committee.

Regional Council approved the Main Street Streetscape Project in the 2005/6 capital budget. In part, through extensive public consultations, this phase will result in design recommendations to improve the look and feel of the street.

“It’s important to have residents represented at every stage of this project,” says District 6 Councillor Andrew Younger. “This project will help us encourage and support businesses in the area, attract new businesses, and make the Main Street business district more open to pedestrians and transit.”

The committee will provide comment and advice to the independent consultants, and will help plan public consultation sessions. The current openings in the committee are as follows:

* one member who is a citizen residing within 1 kilometre of the First Phase of the Main Street Streetscape Project and has no business or commercial interest or conflict in the Main Street / Tacoma Drive area.

* one member who is a District 6 resident and owner, operator, or employee of a business located within the Study Area of this phase of the Main Street Streetscape Design Project.

(The Primary Study Area of this phase of the Main Street Streetscape Design Project extends along Main Street in Dartmouth from Caledonia Road to the Parclo)

Those who are interested in serving on this committee should be available for daytime meetings. This is an ad-hoc committee which includes representatives of various HRM business units and is chaired by the area Councillor Andrew Younger. The mandate will end at the project completion.
