PUBLIC MEETING ON WATER SERVICING IN SPIDER LAKE

(Monday, March 27/06)--Councillor Andrew Younger (East Dartmouth –– The Lakes) and the Halifax Regional Water Commission will host a public information meeting this week on the possibility of providing municipal water services to the Spider Lake area of Waverley.

The public meeting will be held on Thursday March 30th at 7:00pm at Port Wallis United Church on Waverley Road. All interested residents are invited to attend.

Councillor Younger said the issue of providing municipal water service to the portion of the Spider Lake subdivision above the highway crossing has been an issue for many years. In recent years, more residents have experienced problems with the quantity and/or quality of their well water.

He said one major roadblock is that the area in question is outside of the legal service boundary for water services. The proposed Regional Plan includes a provision to include the entire area above Highway 107 in the revised HRM water service boundary. This does not mean that water services will automatically be provided. Rather, if the plan is passed by Regional Council, municipal water servicing can be considered by the community now and in the future.

"I am pleased that Council and the Regional Planning Committee have supported efforts to move this issue forward so that the community can consider municipal water services as an option to address ongoing problems in the area," says Councillor Younger.

Representatives of the Halifax Regional Water Commission will be on hand to present information about the process to get municipal water services, the costs involved, financing options, and the phasing options if the project proceeds.
