Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency Reminds HRM Mobile Home Park Residents of Requirements for Use of Outdoor Wood Burning Appliances

(Monday, April 10, 2006) - Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency wishes to remind residents of Mobile Home Parks within HRM of the regulations and requirements within Bylaw 103 concerning Outdoor Wood Burning Appliances, such as Mexican Clay Pots, Chiminea’s and other uncertified wood burning appliances.

The Fire Service has received many complaints about the use of these appliances within Mobile Home Parks. In some instances the appliances are being used without the proper clearances from combustibles, due to the small lot sizes within Mobile Home Parks. Before using your outdoor wood burning appliance, please be aware of the following restrictions taken from Bylaw 103 Respecting Open Air Burning.

(a) The manufacturers installation instructions are followed;
(b) They are not placed on wooden decks or combustible platforms;
(c) Only dry seasoned firewood shall be used as it burns with little or no smoke by-products;
(d) Clearances of 4.57 meters (15 feet) shall be observed in all directions from other combustible materials, (structures);
(e) These appliances shall not be used when the Department of Natural Resources or the Halifax Regional Municipality have placed a ban on all open air burning;
(f) Only one outdoor wood burning appliance may be used on the property at a time;
(g) The outdoor wood burning appliance must be of sufficient construction to withstand the effects of heating and cooling, and must be constructed of non-combustible material which will prevent the accidental spread of fire.

It is an offense to use outdoor wood burning appliances without following the above provisions.


Illegal burning will constitute a summary offense ticket in the amount of $215.00. Repeat offenders could be fined up to $5,000.00 or 60 days in jail. For inquiries, please call the Fire Inspection & Life Safety Division at 490-5546
