Community Groups Contributes Towards New Swing Set
(Tuesday, May 2/06)-- The North End Walkers, a local citizen group who keep fit with daily exercise, today contributed $500 towards the installation of a new swing set on the Halifax Commons.
The 30-members of the group took up a challenge during the past year to walk over three million (3,000,000) steps on special walking routes the North End Community Health Centre developed to help increase activity in their community. The group walks for different community cause every four-to-five months, and with the help of the Halifax Peninsula Community Health Board last year they raised money for various community events.
“The walkers are very excited about this project, and it has really rippled into an overall increased feeling of empowerment for each member to be able to make a positive difference in their community,” said Jessie Jollymore, Dietician at the North End Community Health Centre and coordinator for the North End Walkers.
District 12 Councillor Dawn Sloane said “The North End Walkers are not only keeping fit and healthy, but they are also giving back to their community, by raising much needed funding for a variety of events and projects. The new swing set on the Commons is badly needed and this donation is a tremendous help.”
