Handover of Moir’s Pond to Mark Arbor Day in Bedford
(Thursday. May 4/06)-- The official turnover of ownership of historic Moir’s Pond to the Halifax Regional Municipality will serve as the backdrop for the annual celebration of Arbor Day in Bedford this year.
Councillor Len Goucher said Moir’s Pond, located adjacent to the Sobey’s store at Mill Cove on the Bedford Highway, would also be officially recognized as a provincial heritage property during the ceremony.
Again this year, red pine seedlings will be given away for planting in the Bedford community. And there will be free pop and hotdogs for those attending the ceremony.
Councillor Goucher said that during the years 1989 to1995, the former Town of Bedford planted more than 40,000 seedlings in total on Arbor Days. Tree varieties ranged from White Pine to Red Spruce. Many of these trees can be seen in the community today.
Arbor Day is a tradition dating back to 1872. This year marks the 134th year of celebration of Arbor Day, first proposed by J. Sterling Morton. Arbor Day is officially celebrated on April 29 each year, but many northern locales, such as Nova Scotia, move the date back a week or two to coincide with warmer weather.
