Motorists, Cyclists Urged to Drive Safely
(Wednesday, May 10/06)-- Now that the warmer weather is here and there are more cyclists on the road, the Chair of HRM”s Bikeways Committee today urged both motorists and cyclists to drive safely and obey the rules of the road.
Councillor Sheila Fougere said the Bikeways Committee urges both motorists and cyclists to “share the road,” but both groups must be very mindful of provisions of the provincial Motor Vehicle Act when using public streets and roads.
Councillor Fougere said although many cyclists often complain about the behaviour of motorists, but already this spring there have been reports about cyclists travelling on roadways two-abreast, rather than in single file as required by the MVA.
“If everyone is mindful and respectful of the other, then hopefully we’ll have an injury-free summer. The roads are big enough for both groups to share..all we ask is that everyone be careful when using them,” she said.
