HRM Celebrates Bike Week June 3-11 This Year

(Tuesday, May 30/2006)-- HRM’s annual Bike Week will be held this year from June 3 - 11 and a number of events are planned throughout the municipality to celebrate cycling in all its forms.

There are events designed for people of all ages throughout all HRM. There will be family trail rides, children’s bike safety training, mountain bike races, scavenger hunts, antique bikes, and more. Everybody is talking about active transportation and all its health benefits. Now is the time to get rolling, and celebrate cycling in HRM! Here are just a few of the highlights.

Bicycle Festival (Sunday, June 4, 2006)

Cyclists and potential bike enthusiasts are encouraged to turn out for this year’s Bicycle Festival, to be held on Sunday, June 4th, from 1:00 p.m to 4:00 p.m at the Barrington Street Superstore, Halifax. This event will showcase the various aspects of cycling.

FREE Ferry and MetroLink Rides for Cyclists (June 3-11)

Throughout Bike Week, cyclists can enjoy complimentary travel on Metro Transit's harbour ferries, as well as MetroLink routes from Portland Hills and Sackville. If you haven't done so already, this is a good time to give the bike racks on the MetroLink bus a try.

Canadian Commuter Challenge


During Environment Week (June 4-10) and Clean Air day (June 7), try a new and sustainable way to get to work.. Canadian Commuter Challenge is a national competition for businesses to compete to reduce their single-occupancy vehicle trips. Encourage your staff or colleagues to walk, bike, bus, or car pool to work. Get fit and reduce air pollution! Register online at www.commuterchallenge.ca or contact Lachlan Barber at 429-0924.

HRM Community Bicycle Auction (Saturday June 3, 2006 8am - 1pm, (Auction begins 9:30am) Devonshire Arena, 3395 Devonshire Avenue, Halifax.

Don’’t have a bicycle? HRM’’s annual bicycle auction is a great place to pick up a set of wheels so that everyone in the family can enjoy the rest of Bike Week! Almost 200 recovered bikes will be auctioned off. Volunteers from the Ecology Action Centre’s BikeAgain! project will be on hand to give your ‘‘new-to-you’’ bike a quick maintenance assessment.

Safety On Wheels (youth in Grades Primary-6) Saturday June 3, 2006 9:30am - 12:30pm


Multipurpose Rm Halifax Forum, 2901 Windsor Street, Halifax.
Complete equipment safety inspection and bicycle safety skill testing for children in grades Primary-6. Activities include balancing at slow speed, riding in a circle, obstacle course, ride and coast, and traffic safety.

Children should be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult. Helmets mandatory. (Some helmets will be available). Prizes awarded to safe cyclists. Participation: FREE Halifax Optimist Club, Mike Gallant 454-0019
